Metallic Epoxy Flooring Systems Los Angeles

Metallic Epoxy Flooring 3D Appearance

Metallic epoxy flooring is currently one of the hottest trends in decorative concrete floors. With metallic flooring, you can achieve a wide range of visual effects and different colors. Others enable you to achieve a stunning 3D appearance, which produces an appearance of ripples, swirling rivers and craters of metallic looking plasma.

Metallic epoxy also creates movement and depth in the floor, thus replicating molten metal. If you have been considering metallic epoxy flooring for your surfaces, here is everything you need to know, to determine whether it is a viable option for you.

What Is Metallic Epoxy?

This flooring material is obtained when a 2-compoent epoxy solids, is combined with metallic pigments. The result is a self-leveling epoxy coating, which is easy to manipulate to create or produce different visual effects.

When it is applied to the floor, various solvents like denatured alcohol, are then applied. These solvents diffuse and move the metallic pigments around in the epoxy. This creates the look of a flowing river, as well as spots of fractured-looking molten metal, sitting on the surface of the coating.

As you might have noticed, this process cannot be carried out by anyone. You need to hire professional contractors, who have specifically handled such projects successfully. The application method used determines the result. For example, some products can be worked with a leaf blower or an air nozzle, giving effects that look like rolling waves, puddling, ripples and moon craters. You can also create two-tone effects if you introduce a second color during application.

Are They Durable?

Durability is one of the most important considerations when choosing a flooring material. Looks can be deceiving, but these beautiful metallic flooring solutions, are a high-performance coating, with the ability to last many years.

An epoxy primer should be installed when applying the first coat. The actual metallic epoxy coating is the applied during the second coating. This is then followed by a third clear coat on the surface. Some contractors install the 4th coat if the top coat is polyurethane. The result is a very thick coating, because of a number of coats involved.

These metallic coatings are equally resistant to salts, oils, acids, chemicals, water, and wear, just like other high-performance epoxy flooring materials. Their ability to reflect light is outstanding because of their glossy surface. This results in considerable cost savings in energy bills. Furthermore, metallic flooring is easy to maintain. Similar to other epoxy coatings, these can also be slippery when wet, especially if you fail to apply anti-slip additive on the final top coat.

Metallic Epoxy Installation

Metallic epoxy installation is similar to other multi-coat systems. The only difference is the manipulation of the pigment used in the metallic coating or addition of metallic solvents. If you are planning to install this floor coat on your own, you require at least 2 people, when you consider the time limitations involved during the steps.

Most of these coats are applied using a squeegee or a notched trowel. It is then back-rolled using a 3/8-inch roller, to produce a thicker film. This process allows the metallic pigments to move throughout the proxy easily. Due to the thickness of the coat, a gallon of the mixture will only cover around 50 feet. Therefore, one person should be mixing the extra batches while the other one is applying the metallic epoxy.

You should start manipulating the metallic coat in around 15 minutes after application. The person mixing the additional batches will also do this. This process is achieved by blowing air straight on the epoxy. This moves it around, thus creating ripples, waves or craters. As you do this, depressions will form. However, it levels itself after 10 minutes, resulting in the desired effect.

Metallic Epoxy Floor DIY

There are certain metallic epoxy products, which require an addition of metallic solvents to the base coat, as an alternative for manipulating it with air. These are applied after the base coat, thus inducing puddles of molten metal, as well as giving the surface a river effect. These require at least 20 minutes to set. When working with solvents, it is always advisable to use a sample first. Since solvents take some time to react with the epoxy, you will get an estimate of the durations needed to produce the desired effect.

Bottom Line

You need to note that metallic epoxy flooring is quite cost-intensive. However, the extra cost of materials will soon be forgotten when once your floor is done. If you are looking for a flooring option with an exotic and beautiful showroom look, then metallic epoxy coating should be among your top considerations.

Stamped Concrete Patterns

Stamped concrete can be used in various places around the home, including patios, driveways, pool decks, entryways, and walkways. So, what makes it different from other types of concrete? It features a 3-step procedure, including the addition of a base color and an accent color. This is then followed by stamping or embossing a pattern straight onto the concrete. With stamped concrete, you can never go wrong.

2. Concrete Overlays

The main feature of this type of concrete is to give your old concrete a fresh, new look. You can also call it a facelift if you prefer. Most of the old concrete surfaces contain markings and broken sections. The concrete has been repeatedly removed and replaced, creating a non-uniform surface. Such looks can even lower the quality of your home.

 Concrete Coatings

Thanks to decorative concrete overlays, you can now cover up such ugly-looking and bad areas, and give them a new look. This application is very common among homeowners. Most are currently using it on patios, driveways, pool decks, entryways, walkways, and sidewalks. Additionally, a large number of homeowners are using these decorative concrete finishes, both inside and outside.

Stamped Concrete Patterns & Designs

Stamped Concrete Patterns Overlays

Stamped concrete patterns provide all the aesthetic benefits of normally stamped concrete. The only difference is that they are applied over existing concrete. A stamped concrete overlay enables you to duplicate or replicate the texture and beauty of slate, brick, wood, natural stone or other materials.

stamped concrete patterns

The good news is that you don’t have to replace your concrete. Additionally, they don’t come with high overhead costs. If you want to keep things simple, you can use ready-made stamped concrete patterns, and apply on your surfaces. However, if you want to explore your creative side, you can make a customized artificial appearance, using stamped concrete.

Creating a Customized Concrete Stamping Tool

When creating a custom stamped concrete design, the most important thing is to be creative and innovative. If you are not sure where you should begin or even the decorative pattern or effect to apply, the color to use or the combination of patterns, just look around your home and you will be inspired.

You can come up with a unique design idea. Moreover, you can use readily available items like a pillow or a painting or a simple rug, to draw inspiration and establish a foundation for your theme.

As long as the chosen idea can make a lasting impression on cement, then you are good to go. There are not boundaries to your imagination.

All you need to do is to start somewhere and expand upon the idea. Stamp impressions can be built from any idea or inspiration in your home or immediate environment.

You can also use commercial stamping. There are various solid ideas out there, although they sometimes seem over-ambitious. The thing is, you don’t require large stamps to bring out the beauty in your concrete.

In fact, it is something that can be discreetly done, using concrete overlay effects. For example, something like a simple woodblock in your home can be incorporated into your stamped concrete.

However, you need to ensure that any material used does not stick to the surface finish, which might otherwise damage the product or results.

Additionally, any durable material can enhance your interior and exterior surfaces. You can also use commercial stamps to create corner designs or decorative borders for your counter tops.

Commercial Stamps

Commercial stamps can also be used on a large scale, to decorate your concrete garden path or driveway. Creating stamped concrete patterns can make your redecoration project fun and interesting. The best thing about this procedure is that it is easy to carry out, both for professionals and homeowners.

Stamped concrete patterens

You will also be learning some aspects of concrete while improving your DIY skills. For example, if you are redecorating your home because it was damaged by fire or you have just moved into the new property, then you can use a past emblem such as an auto transmission system, and use it as your customized concrete stamping tool.

As you can see, you don’t have to spend vast amounts of money investing in commercial stamps. There are ready materials around you, which you can utilize and come up with a unique design. After all, you want your home to stand out and not appear as if it is part of a local building or housing project.

You need to note that when using past or old items as concrete stamping tools, you should be aware of the associated risks. What does this mean?

In short, your precious item from the past, which was passed down to you by your grandparents, can end up damage, if it fails to pull out from the concrete. On the other hand, commercial stamps are generally engineered and designed to come out clean and leave a beautiful or artistic impression. They pull out smoothly, leaving consistent results. However, homemade or customized concrete tools don’t achieve the same effect.

Artificial Stamped Concrete Overlays

You can apply your artificial stamped concrete overlay, on existing or new concrete, on both exterior and interior surfaces. Patterned concrete overlays can be applied on different surfaces, including floors, walls and other vertical surfaces.

They are very effective when it comes to refreshing the appearance of an existing surface such as a patio, driveway, floors and pool decks. Before using stamped concrete overlays on your concrete surfaces, consult a building professional, who will determine whether your concrete can be successfully resurfaced.

How to Make Concrete Countertop

Concrete Countertop DIY

There are various kitchen countertop alternatives to choose from, and concrete countertops are one of them. Concrete is mainly preferred due to its affordability as well as high durability and low maintenance. Concrete being a natural stone is also easy to work with. You can either buy a cured and finished pre-cast counter from local fabricators or even make one yourself. Everyone can make a concrete countertop, whether you are a beginner or proficient, which will save you costs involved in hiring a contractor. If you think you are up to the challenge, here are the steps to follow.

1. Gather the Materials

The basics of building a concrete countertop are simply making the mold, pouring the mold, and finishing the concrete. This means that have to assemble the right materials and tools for creating your molds as well as mixing, setting and even curing the concrete. You can use various materials for building the form. However, it is always advisable to go with the easily obtainable and cheap materials, especially if this is your first concrete project.

2. Build the Form

First, you need to determine the dimensions of your countertop. When you have finished establishing the dimensions, you then proceed to build the form, over which you will pour the concrete. Once the concrete dries, it will match your desired specifications.

To build this form, go for Melamine-coated particleboard. It is preferred because it is affordable, readily available and most importantly, concrete does not adhere to it. Seal all joints in the construction to make sure that concrete attains dry edges after drying.

If you have never used caulk before, then you can use painters tape to outline the joints. With the painter’s tape, you can always correct any mistake, especially if you over-apply the sealant. To remove any imperfections and create smooth edges on the caulk bed, just run a wet finger along the silicone caulk.

Ensure that you remove the tape immediately the caulking is fully applied. If it dries on the tape, you risk tearing it as you remove the tape. Allow the caulk to cure for around one day then clean the interior of the form using rubbing alcohol.

Reinforce the Foam

The next step involves coating the melamine frame interior using olive oil. You might be asking yourself why this coating is necessary. Well, if you fail to do it, concrete will not slip out of the frame easily after drying. Before pouring the concrete into the frame, one crucial step remains. That process is adding reinforcement which you should do using a steel mesh.

If you want to achieve perfect results, suspend it at the mid-point, along the vertical height of your melamine form. To achieve this, just drill screws along the exterior walls of the frame. After that, attach the screws to the mesh, using strong ties, zip ties or just a bungee cord.

Proceed to extend the metal wiring throughout the width of the frame. For this to succeed, your concrete should be watery. It should not be too thick or too light. You need to obtain a certain consistency. If this sound like too much work, then you can just mix your concrete the way you like, pour it halfway into the form, set in the steel mesh, and then fill the rest of the form with concrete.

Mix the Concrete

When mixing the concrete for your concrete countertops project, ensure that you adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions. You should aim to achieve a thick consistency. Anything thicker or lighter than that either will be too hard to work with or will produce undesired results.

If the concrete is too wet, then it becomes excessively brittle after drying up. You can also augment the concrete using additives that minimize or inhibit shrinking and cracking. They are known as admixtures and you can find them at your local improvement retail store.

Pour the Concrete

Once your concrete is ready, pour enough of it into the form and ensure that you fill the volume completely. Spread the materials into the corners and along the edges, using your hands. If you had attached the steel mesh reinforcement onto the frame, it is time to disconnect.

Look for a nice and smooth flat board and use it to screen and level the concrete. Apply forward and backward motions on the board to fill low spots and smooth the surface. Your trowel should not be very far, in case you encounter any excess.

Proceed to use a wood float and use it to smooth the concrete surface. As you do this, enlist the help of a friend to shake the form side by side. If there is no one nearby, just use a rubber mallet to tap the sides gently. This way, you will create vibrations needed to dissipate the air bubbles. Allow the concrete to harden for a while then run a tool over its surface once more. If there are still imperfections, remove them with the trowel.

Remove the Foam

Cover the concrete surface with a sheet of plastic, to prevent the loss of too much moisture. This way, it will cure properly with the right texture and consistency. The longer the concrete cures, the harder it gets. However, a few days, in this case, will be sufficient to give it an excellent cure. After 4 to 5 days, remove the melamine frame and then lift your countertop to the position where you intend to use it.

Finish the Job

Chances are very high that there are visible bubbles and small cracks on your concrete countertop. Do not panic. You can leave them if either you don’t feel bothered or you can undertake spot repairs using a concrete patching compound. You need to remember to give the patches time to dry after application.

concrete countertop

Use a diamond grit sandpaper to sand your countertop. You can either use a power sander or do it manually. When all that is done, wash your concrete countertop thoroughly, ensuring that remove all fine particles and any debris. Allow it to dry completely then cap off your work with a concrete sealer.

Bottom Line

Making a concrete countertop from scratch should only require a few days. Meaning that you will not have to shut down your kitchen for long. Additionally, you will be so satisfied with the results that the whole experience will be worth your time. You will have also improved your skills, which would enable you to build other concrete structures around your home.

Concrete Overlays Concrete Resurfacing Contractors Los Angeles

What are Concrete Overlays

Concrete Overlays are used for a variety decorative concrete uses.
From maintenance to the protection of the integrity of your floor, slab or pavement. And to provide an extension for the life of your structure. Concrete overlays can provide a new surface and reduce the need for a total replacement. Overlays deliver a versatility that allows them to be both decorative and functional. The following will discuss the various types of overlays that are available for use.

Stamped Concrete Overlays

Stamped overlays are a way to rejuvenate a old slab into a whole new look.  The overlay mix via gauge rake which provides smoothness to the surface that is uniform. From there, it formed with either textures or marks. Stamping tools for this overlay are available in a variety of patterns that can mimic other building materials including brick, wood, stone or marble. The thickness of the overlay depends on the depth of the imprint, which ranges from a ¼ inch to 3/4 inch.

Self-Leveling Overlays

Self-Leveling overlays level themselves without the need for troweling, which makes them expressly convenient for smoothing out worn or uneven concrete. The material is  poured onto the surface and then spread evenly using a spreader. Its viscosity and weight aid it. Self-leveling overlays are used  for the creation of decorative patterns that can consume dyes, engraved designs or inlays of metal or wood. Most often these overlays are best used for the following: leveling of a concrete area in preparation for the covering of wood, tile or carpeting.

Spray-Down Overlays

Concrete overlays are air sprayed onto the concrete for a smooth finish.
Overlay textured finish is applied using a splatter fashion. Tapping down the raised globules will make the overlay smoother.
Stencils can be extensive for the addition of creative process.

Epoxy Terrazzo

Materials such as recycled glass, granite, and marble chips are ingredients of epoxy terrazzo.
Flooring, counters, showers, fountains are some of the main uses of epoxy terrazzo. Because it’s non porous and seamless, epoxy terrazzo does not allow moisture or radon to penetrate it.

Epoxy Floor Coatings

There is a functional floor coating for garage floors that provide a chemical resistant and wear surface. There are many advantages to using epoxy coatings for your floors, including durability and grip, but one of the most popular reasons for choosing epoxy is for the look.

Metallic Epoxy Coatings

Is a new type of coating that allows consumers to guide concrete as a manner of replicating nickel, aged bronze, copper, silver and other shimmery patinas. Some metallic epoxy coatings contain real metallic powders and others utilize specialized pigments that are reflective. They are useful for the provision of an upscale and modern aesthetic in the following: restaurants, offices, and retail establishments.

Micro-Toppings

It is an option that is decorative and can create overlays that are micro-thin. They are effective in single or multi layers for a variety of effects. Micro-toppings can have a smooth or textured finish.
Overlays generally come in two colors gray or white, you can mix pigments to the mix for a desired color.

Skim Coat Concrete

These skim coats can be used indoors as well as to deliver a clean canvas for stenciled patterns, dyes, and stains. Some tint base via a variant of color while others can be custom tinted with a specified amount of color.

Layering differing hues create unique color variations. The coats can add slip resistance, texture, and color to patios and pools decks. Existing concrete floors creates beautiful makeover with the implementation of micro toppings and skim coats.

Maintaining Concrete Overlays

Installing quality concrete overlays by well-trained craftsmen will help your floor last decades.
Using a sealer will protect the overlay and make it easier to clean and maintain. Sealers will enhance the colors, protect from staining, as well as repel water.

They will require routine maintenance that is contingent upon exposure conditions as well as traffic amount.

Maintain interior flooring by wet or dry dust mopping. Exterior overlays may need (occasional) scrubbing with a mild detergent or pressure washing.

Concrete Stamps for Concrete Designs

What is stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete refers to concrete that is patterned and textured to resemble various patterns and textures. These patterns include brick, stone, tile, wood, flagstone and slate. Stamped concrete is commonly used in such places as interior floors, pool decks, driveways, sidewalks and other places.

One of the major features that make stamped concrete so attractive to users is its ability to resemble other authentic materials which would cost more if they were used in the construction process.

How to Use Concrete Stamps

The procedure for creating stamped concrete may be divided into three main steps. The first step involves the addition of a base color. Simply put, abase color is the primary color that the stamped concrete will bear. The base color is chosen based on the color of the natural construction material that the stamped concrete will resemble. For instance, if the stamped concrete are meant to resemble wood, then a shade of brown will be chosen. In order to produce a base color, a color hardener is added to the concrete.

Concrete Stamps

The next step involves the addition of accent color. An accent color refers to the secondary color that is used in stamped concrete. The main purpose of the accent color is to give texture to the stamped concrete. Accent color is also used to bring out additional building materials in the stamped concrete. This step involves the use of a non-adhesive pigment called a color release. The color release is used to color the stamped concrete and to prevent the stamps from sticking to the concrete.

The last step in creating concrete stamps involves making the stamping patterns. The patterns reflect the shape of the natural building material (e.g. slate, wood, etc.). To make the stamping patterns, an imprint is made on the concrete after it has been poured with a concrete stamp. Concrete stamps are usually made of polyurethane so as to form a natural stone texture. The stamps are placed on the concrete after applying the color release. After they are moved from the concrete, the concretes stamps leave behind the desired pattern.

Why use stamped concrete?

Stamped concretes are an affordable way to achieve the desired look of a surface. For example, using stamped concrete for your patio will give it the appearance and texture of a stone patio for less than half the cost of natural slate. Using stamped concrete also offers a wide variety of choices for the natural material you wish the stamps to mimic. They also allow for creativity, for instance you can draw different animal or bird shapes on the stamped concrete.

Another advantage of using concrete stamps is that in the long term, the cost of maintenance is reduced since it never needs resetting or replacing, unlike other materials such as pavers.

Stamped concrete lasts longer than many other building materials, hence it increases longevity of the surface it is used on.

With such benefits, it is no wonder that the demand for stamped concrete has been on the rise over the last few years.
